How it Works

WEAP offers in-home therapy for children. This means therapists recruited from your area and trained by experts will carry out therapy on a day to day basis. A parent or guardian is required to be on premises at these times.

Step 1: Diagnosis
Take this short quiz to see if your child meets the criteria for autism:

About Early Social Delays

If you answered "No" to 2 or more questions, have a Doctor interact with your child and get information to arrive at a correct diagnosis. This is necessary for the waiver system as well as for developing an appropriate treatment plan.

Step 2: Waiver
If the diagnosis is one of several that may indicate an Autism Spectrum Disorder, and you choose WEAP as your treatment provider, you need to call your county to get included on the waiver system. WEAP staff can provide you with the name and number.

Step 3: Testing
The first step after receiving our materials is to get the child tested either through their Pediatrician or through us. This will tell us where the problems are and give us a head start in prescribing a treatment program that will meet your goals.

Step 4: The Workshop
Although the Senior will have come to the home once or twice previously, the workshop is how the therapy process begins. It is an initial meeting at the family home. The Doctor in charge of the case comes out, as does the Senior Therapist, Clinic Supervisor and the Line Therapists. The goal is to evaluate where the child is in development. The Doctor and Senior can identify problem areas and start constructing a therapy program which will best benefit the child.

Step 5: Therapy
With the process in full swing, Line Therapists are scheduled to coincide with family availability in order to work with the child for a few hours a day. Therapy consists of "programs". Programs are skills the child learns to master over time. Programs consist of things like matching items, learning speech labels and pronunciation, learning appropriate social interaction, etc. Programs teach children all the tools they need to become part of the world at large.

Step 6: Progress Reviews
Once every 2 months or so, the child will need to be brought into their local clinic to be evaluated by their WEAP Doctor. This is to make sure things are progressing as planned. Problem areas are discussed and new techniques will be enacted if necessary.
